Prologue.

The story so far:

I have a couple of friends, Becca and Nate Junior. They are a beautiful couple, and they also make music together under the name Duover. That's a link right there. Go ahead and click on it, listen to it all. We'll still be here when you get back.

All done? Good.

So not only are they beautiful people, they make beautiful music, and they wanted to share that music for free with all of their friends. Which is when Nate made the best/worst/best decision ever: Send a Facebook message to 100 people he knew letting them know that they could go to this site and listen to their album.

Seems innocent enough, right?

At first, all the messages he recieved back were very positive, but from the beginning there was an obvious problem. You see, when you send out a message to multiple people on Facebook, there is no way to respond to just one person within that message. Every response within the Duover message was relayed to everyone that the message was originally sent to. So every time you delete the message from your inbox, it would return as soon as soon as someone sent a reply. Annoying, non?

And it was annoying, and some people began to protest, myself included. So now the thread is populated with congratulations and complaints. There is no way to turn it off as long as people keep responding to it. Nate tried to get Facebook to kill it somehow, but (I'm guessing here) got no response. All he wanted to do was get his music to his friends in the best way he could think of, but sometimes the best intentions have the worst consequences. Everyone was pissed.

And then.... The Internet happened.

I'm going to leave the rest up to you to read. It may not be the best thing that ever happened to the Internet, but it did happen, and it should be preserved somewhere for all of us to see. That is my purpose here, and I hope that you all enjoy. I'll keep it updated as the thread continues.

Once again, go listen to Duover. It's pretty awesome.

Thank you too, Nathan, I had a great time as well.I'm glad you enjoyed my OTHER pussy ;). I must admit, I haven't had sex in a while, so getting mounted by such a strong and powerful man was a pleasant surprise after so many long months of ...abstinence. I hope this message doesn't scare you off, I just wanted you to know what a wonderful time I had with you.You are permanently invited to "the love cave between my legs"

"So, you think you know who you are and what you are, and you are this unit that is self-contained. This is you, inhabiting your space.

Okay, so now you drip a drop of sweat and it falls away from you onto the ground. Or you slough off some skin cells and they float around with the other dust. Is that still you? Has it stopped being you?

Say the dust falls down into the soil, with the sweat, and a flower grows from that wet ground. Is that flower you? It contains microscopic parts of you.

So, I'll ask you again, what are you, and where do you begin and end? And how much of yourself do you leave on every place you go and every thing you touch?"

Kind of single? That's how I imagine my ex describing herself when we were together.

I'm completely single, and unemployed, and about to leave the country for 5 months. I enjoy short walks to the beer and romantic dinners alone.

Is that French for please reply more? Here is are some tips for those freaking out at all the notifications of new messages 1) don't open the message, that's right leave it alone, if you don't open it facebook won't send you an update to your email, if you do open it again, facebook will update you as soon as someone else adds something 2) if you avoid opening it you can remember that this is message one in your inbox, you don't have a new message if your inbox has a one next to it, wait until the number is higher than one 3) with something like 400 people in the "to:" box I'd expect this to continue for at least another week, it's possible everyone hasn't logged into facebook yet 4) don't try to circumvent items 1 and 2 by deleting the message, facebook will update your email and make it look like a whole new message when someone else responds. Why? Because we have a "reply all" button. Amuse yourself, treat this as another status update, look at Mr Babcock's posts!

We are into the first week of 2010, and it's time for a list. We've seen best and worst lists of 2009 and The Aughts - but it's time for
"The Top 4 Most Annoying Bands of the First Week of 2010"

4. Portland band "Church" for changing their name to "Ape Cave". Nothing personal, but Portland got all hot and bothered - and then remembered seminal 80's band "THE Church" so now we all have to change our speaking patterns this year to accommodate - "I went to the Ape Cave show (you know that band Church, well they changed their name to Ape Cave now, yeah, you know... anyway I love that band..."). They come in number 4 as the first band who Starfuckerddd out on Portland this year.
3. Tie - anything Sea Wolf or M. Ward have done so far in 2010. Guilty by association.
2. Duover. For reasons not worth mentioning here in our world.
1. Vampire Weekend - who will release their brand new record "Contra" with the unbelievably annoying track of the first week of 2010 "Horchata"! It beat out the "Koobe Caf" insta-update.

To stop the e mails and/or SMS notifications go to the top of the screen, SETTINGS (next to LOGOUT), ACCOUNT SETTINGS, NOTIFICATIONS, there you will find a list of checkboxes for your e mail and your phone. Just uncheck the boxes to recieve notifications for inbox messages. If you don't delete the message it will continue growing into the awesomeness is has become without bothering you.

If you're not interested in being social, why join a "social networking site?" I understand not being comfortable with, or even particularly interested in, people you don't already know, but it is an unavoidable fact of life that you will have to interact with strangers, some of whom will have different interests, outlooks and opinions than you. Some of these interactions might be uncomfortable, boring or even painful but what being exposed to the amazing variety of humanity does best is teach us to be tolerant of each others' differences and makes us more informed, respectful and open to new things.

The trouble with so much of the new technology we have is that it makes it very easy to filter out things we wouldn't normally seek. We can wrap ourselves in a cocoon of our own tastes, political views, religious beliefs, etc. Read the comments on any political blog for an example. Nearly all the bloggers are preaching to the already converted as evidenced by the reactions of their readers, and if someone does have the audacity to disagree they are quickly and mercilessly shouted down and insulted. Our technology has allowed us to shelter ourselves from "those people" and limit our attention only to the things we like. It's kind of like a kid being allowed ice cream for dinner every night, they get spoiled and throw a tantrum if they are instead offered broccoli.

This can be very, very dangerous. There is a reason balkanization is a word. We've all lived to see how well things turned out in the Balkans.

As a musician I've often thought about how certain musical genres decline in quality once they are established enough for those creating in them to only listen to others in their genre. Punk after the mid-80s suffered from bands only listening to other punk bands. The same can be said of hip hop or most other established genres. The best way to keep something from becoming cliched and stale is to import ideas from elsewhere.

So that's how I'm approaching "The Thread." So Nathan Jr., without understanding exactly how Facebook handles emails with multiple recipients, accidentally gathered everyone in his friends list together with (in most cases) nothing in common except himself, and now we all get to say whatever silly things we want to to each other. Awesome. Maybe someone I've never met will say something I've never thought about and it'll make me a better person. Or maybe one of my dearest friends will just say "penis" and make me laugh. Or maybe someone will say something rude and piss me off.

Whatever the case, it's hardly something to be upset about and I welcome the new stimuli. And if it gets annoying, I can always not read it.

The only thing I can think is if somebody gets a hold of the right person at FB they can pull this bitch out by the roots, but my guess is that some people have tried and they are not getting answers. Like it or not, we are all kind of stuck with each other. And to be honest, your ranting is very likely going to just get this thing going more.

Nate can't stop it, Michael. He reported it as spam repeatedly days ago. Facebook has not responded to any of the many people who have reported it as spam. He made a (unintentionally hilarious) mistake, and I'm sure he's sad that he drug a lot of people that don't want to be here into this. Again: HE CANT STOP THIS. If you find some way to, good on ya. Until then, the best thing people annoyed by this can do is ignore it. Don't open it. DO NOT DELETE IT. Pretend it is not there. Flaming it will most definitely keep it going.

These things do die off over time, but I wouldn't count on it being soon.

How about instead of delegating a leader for something YOU want done. You do it yourself. I suggest starting a thread about how you hate threads. It "threads" the word rather fast.

matt... it makes more sense for it to come from nathan. he started it and he's friends with everyone on the list, so they'd possibly listen.

Every once in awhile, I get an email that isn't about this thread and I get very confused. I then realize, there was a time in the past that I got normal emails like on how to increase my penis size or that there was a prince in Africa that needed my help and my checking account number. This makes me very sad and I die a little inside.

So I went with my family down to LA for New Years. We all had a really good time, but because we had to do it on the cheap we had a seven hour layover(from midnight to 7AM)in San Francisco on the way home. We made the best of it, got out of the airport for a while, but by the time we got on the plane home we were all really beat. When we were getting close to Portland, around 8:30, the pilot came on the intercom and told us that there would be some turbulence on our way into Portland and to keep our seat belts on.

When the first turbulence hit, it was kind of fun. Some dude even said, "Whoo!" like it was a roller coaster or something. But it kept getting worse and worse. The drink roller started coming down the aisle at one point, and one of the flight attendants had to unbuckle herself and grab it. People were kind of yelping and there was a pall in the air. I was sitting next to my mom and she was holding on to my arm really tight. Then the lights in the plane started to flicker, and my mom got scared. She said you're moving with your auntie and uncle in bel air. I whistled for a cab, and when it came near, the license plate said fresh and it had a dice in the mirror. If anything I could say that this cab was rare, but I thought now forget it, yo holmes to Bel Air. I pulled up to the house around 7 or 8 and I yelled to the cabby, yo holmes smell you later! Looked at my kingdom, I was finally there, to rule on this thread as the fresh prince of bel air.

Michael, do we need to sign you up for Special Threaducation? This was all an accident. There is no way off the Thread, far as we know. I am not keeping anyone on any list deliberately. You friended me some months ago, I attempted to let you know about a free record I made with my beautiful girlfriend. The Thread is a Facebook glitch more than a Duover marketing strategy. We only tried to send one message. Perhaps you should read the Prologue on theduoversituation.blogspot.com

As for your privacy, I don't think you're attracting many voyeurs by being mean and nasty...

Matthew Michael Hollywood January 8 at 3:19pm Reply
So what are you saying, life isn't fair? Sure, you shouldn't have to do anything, but unfortunately there's not much you can do aside from turning off the notifications and ignoring the message in your inbox. We're all in the same situation, sure, it's annoying but getting upset about it will not make one bit of difference so why make yourself miserable?

As far as privacy goes, did you read the Facebook privacy policy and terms before joining? I doubt most people actually do. The idea of privacy on a social website you willingly joined is a little laughable. It's like saying you should be able to dance naked in front of an open window without any peeping toms looking at you.

Did you know the FBI and CIA can read your emails and monitor your phone calls without telling anyone? If you want to be upset about an invasion of privacy, start there. There are hundreds of more worthy targets to vent your righteous indignation on. Getting angry about something that happened on Facebook when there is a world full of real problems needing to be solved is the epitome of "hipster nonsense" and just good old American self-important entitlement.

If you can't bring yourself to turn off your notifications for fear of missing all the important facebook stuff (why do you need to log in to something else to see a notification that you should log in to Facebook when you can just go to Facebook?) then you probably are going to have to delete your account and start a new one. That's an inconvenience, yeah, not a small one, but not a big one either like losing your job or home. Sorry you have to deal with this. Like you said, you never asked for this, none of us did, but Nathan Jr., like life often throws you things you weren't expecting. Like this one time he threw me half a pack of smokes someone left in his car.

Have a good day, Michael.
